How this was calculated
  • Bedroom 1: weight 1.38
  • Bedroom 2: weight 0.80
  • Room weights come from size and amenities; you can adjust them.
  • Part of the rent covers shared space (kitchen, living, etc.) and is split equally; the rest is split by room.
  • Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent so the total stays exact.

How the rent split is calculated

RoomRatio supports four methods. Each makes a different assumption about what makes a split fair — you choose the basis, the calculator shows the formula and the rounding.

By room quality

Each participant's share is proportional to the points assigned to their room — area, light, en-suite, and other amenities. Points are yours to set.

rent × room_points ÷ total_points
By income

Each participant's share is proportional to their income. Raw income never appears in a share link — the calculator keeps it client-side only.

rent × income ÷ total_income
Custom percentage

Enter any percentages that add to 100. Useful when the household has already agreed on a split and just wants to confirm the amounts.

rent × agreed_percent ÷ 100
Equal

All participants pay the same share. One penny of remainder goes to the first participant when the rent does not divide evenly.

rent ÷ number_of_participants

Worked example — split by room quality

Two roommates share a $2 000/month apartment. Alex has the larger room (12 points), Sam has the smaller one (8 points).

Monthly rent · $2,000
A
Alex
Larger room · 12 pts · 12 ÷ 20 = 60%

Smaller room · 8 pts · 8 ÷ 20 = 40%

rent × room_points ÷ total_points

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to sign up to use the calculator?
No. The calculator is free and requires no account. Enter your values and see results immediately.
Is my income data stored anywhere?
No raw income is stored or sent anywhere. Income inputs stay client-side. If you save a household, you will be asked for explicit consent before any income is retained.
How does rounding work?
Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent. If the total doesn't divide exactly, one cent of remainder goes to the first participant, so the shares always add up to the exact rent.
Can I share the result with my roommates?
Yes. Use 'Create share link' to generate a read-only summary. Income is never included in the share link.
Can I split utilities and other shared costs separately?
Yes — see the full calculator directory for utilities split, electricity, water, and other shared-home cost calculators.
